VW Jetta vs Mazda3: Performance Specs

You'll find two engines with more than enough juice powering the VW Jetta and Mazda3. Both standard 4-cylinder engines produce roughly 150 horsepower, but the VW Jetta engine is turbocharged. That gives it an advantage in terms of torque (184 lb-ft of torque, compared to the Mazda3's 150 lb-ft of torque).

As a result, the base VW Jetta feels a bit livelier on city streets and highways alike. It's more efficient, too, with an EPA-estimated 30 city and 40 highway MPG.1 The Mazda3 has solid fuel efficiency ratings, but its 28 city and 37 highway MPG doesn't quite live up to the gold standard set by the Volkswagen car.

Cargo Space & Storage

Drivers of small cars still want big space in the trunk, and in that respect, the Volkswagen Jetta delivers. It has 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough to hold about 10 pieces of carry-on luggage. There're plenty of storage cubbies in the cabin, too, including a larger center console bin with a soft-surface phone bin.

The Mazda3 sedan trunk is a bit on the small side, with just 12.4 cubic feet of cargo volume available. That may be enough for your weekly groceries, but it falls behind what the VW car offers. Plus, the Mazda3 has fewer and smaller storage cubbies throughout the cabin.

You'll like that both vehicles have standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats. You can configure them to your liking and find plenty of space to store longer, larger, or bulkier items.

Top-Tier Technology Features

You can stay connected wherever your ride takes you with either the VW Car-Net® or MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system. Both come standard with Bluetooth®, so you can make hands-free calls during your drive, and navigation systems are another optional perk.

Only the VW system comes standard with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, and MirrorLink® for your smartphone integration. You can use some of your favorite apps from the touchscreen. The Mazda3 lacks these three features entirely.

It also lacks a digital instrument panel, one of the more intriguing optional features on the VW Jetta. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit measures more than 10 inches and displays your information in high resolution right behind the steering wheel. You can even customize what's displayed.
