When to Change Transmission Fluid

The transmission is one of the most important systems in your vehicle. Without it, you wouldn't be able to transfer power to the wheels. Wondering when to change transmission fluid? Our team at Savannah Volkswagen's Service Center will shed some light on the answer.

The interval you follow depends on the type of transmission your vehicle uses. Savannah, Richmond Hill, and Pooler drivers can learn more about when their fluid should be changed, below!

Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

If your vehicle uses an automatic transmission, you can typically go longer in between transmission fluid changes. In most cases, you should have it changed out every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. In some cases, the transmission never needs its fluid changed.

Obviously, that's quite a wide interval. How will you know when your vehicle needs a transmission fluid change? For the most accurate, precise information, check your vehicle owner's manual. The maintenance schedule will key you into the exact intervals recommended for your make and model car.

Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Drive stick? You'll probably need to change your transmission fluid a bit more often. In general, you should change your fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Under heavy-duty use, that interval can be as frequent as 15,000 miles. Again, it's best to check your own maintenance schedule for the most accurate information.

Why the shorter interval? With a manual transmission, fluid contamination can happen more quickly. As the synchronizers, bearings, and gears in the transmission wear out, you'll get metal particles from them floating around in the fluid. They make it more difficult for the fluid to perform effectively as a lubricant.

Generally, this is less of a problem with automatic transmission fluid. Automatic transmissions generate more heat, though, which causes the fluid to degrade over time.

Signs You Need to Change Transmission Fluid

Whether you have an automatic or manual transmission, you should check transmission fluid regularly. It's also smart to watch out for signs you need to change the fluid, many of which you'll notice from behind the wheel. They include:

  • Slipping gears. If you're slipping between gears, it's a sign of dirty transmission fluid. Check your fluid ASAP.
  • Vehicle surges or falls back. Some people are heavy- or light-footed on the gas pedal, but if your vehicle surges forward or falls back without good reason, dirty transmission fluid may be at fault.
  • Problems shifting gears. This can be worse with manual transmissions, where you may find it hard to shift gears at all. It's yet another clear sign of dirty fluid that needs to be changed.
